Cameos have a storied history that dates as far back as the Roman Empire.
A cameo is typically created by carving a high (or positive) relief image into stone, glass, or as in the case of this piece, coral.
This antique cameo brooch is an exquisite example. It features an elegant female profile (a classic motif in cameo-making).
This image is typically called the "anonymous Victorian woman."
The upswept hair would indicate this came from the late Victorian era. The figure is rendered in incredible detail.
As you can see, the carved cameo is held in a dazzling 800-silver frame which is accented by twelve sparkling marcasite rhinestones.
There is a brooch-pin on the reverse of the piece as well as a bale, giving you lots of options in wearing and displaying the piece.
You will find a small, stamped mark on the reverse of the frame which reads "800".
Despite some minor wear and a few light surface scratches to the surrounding silver, this beautiful cameo remains in very good antique condition.
