This remarkable vintage statue depicts the Infant Christ of Prague, a Roman wax statue located originally in the Church of Our Lady Victorious in Malá Strana, Czech Republic.
Pilgrims flock to the original statue in Prague due to the belief that it once belonged to Saint Teresa of Avila. It is said to hold miraculous powers.
This stunning chalkware replica measures over 15" tall and features exquisite hand-painted and hand-crafted decoration.
What we love about this particular piece is the elaborate vestments and the detailing of the face. Beautiful.
Chalkware describes figurines or sculptures made from gypsum, a sulfate mineral also found in alabaster. The word gypsum means "chalk" in Greek.
As you can see, the figure is rendered in lovely detail.
The face is highly emotive and realistic with gently painted features and deep, incisive eyes.
The chalkware figure is carved to look as though it wearing a long white robe while hand-stitched lace and satin robes give it a wonderfully textural, three-dimensional look.
You can see that the figure's sandy brown hair shows a bit of wear and chipping. The orb in the child's right hand also shows some very minor wear as well as a small, drilled hole in the top wear a decoration may have once rested.
The figure's ethereal gown is comprised of several tiers of winter-white lace. More lace is gathered around the sleeves and collar.
Each of the child's hands comes through the sleeves; one holds a blue orb to signify regality while the other hand makes the sign of the Benediction (middle and index fingers are raised while ring and pinkie finger are pressed against the palm).
The left hand shows signs of repair. The cross is missing from the orb.
A flowing, regal cape consisting of red satin and an overlying layer of metallic lace drapes over the figure's shoulders while a tall collar frames the beautiful gold-tone crown.
The crown is made of beautifully filigreed metal and boasts a shimmering gold-tone finish. Lots of little AB, red, blue, and pink glass rhinestones give the crown an added touch of sparkle.
The garments are simply pinned around the statue as they feature to hooks or clasps.
Despite some minor wear and a few chips around the face, hair and left hand, this wonderfully emotive, ethereal statue remains in good vintage condition overall.
