This is an exquisite antique cane with a beautiful genuine bone handle.
As you can see, the cane's shaft is made of richly ebonized wood.
"Ebonizing" describes the technique of giving regular wood the dark appearance of ebony by repeatedly lacquering it with black stain.
Some areas of the cane (particularly near the top and bottom) show the original color of the wood underneath.
It is the handle that really catches the eye.
Rendered in genuine light-colored bone, the handle is minimally embellished near the base with a lovely, hand-carved design of simple scallops.
The handle is very securely attached to the shaft.
Finally, a small silver-tone ferrule is attached to the bottom of the shaft.
Both shaft and handle show some expected wear and light finish loss, as well as a few minor scratches here and there.
Overall, the cane remains in good antique condition.
These vintage canes make for wonderful decorative and display pieces. They each have their own personality and style.
