Here is a beautiful antique cheroot holder rendered in wonderful sterling silver. It dates from 1898 and is in excellent antique condition.

A cheroot or "stogie" as they're more often called today is short, cylindrical cigar with two clipped ends.

The word "stogie" is actually short for Conestoga, referring to the Conestoga wagoneers of the late 18th century renowned for their love of the rich, flavored cigars. Mark Twain was also a noted lover or cheroots.

As you can see, the case is conical, tapering slightly toward the bottom.

A heavy sterling silver loop attached to the bottom of the case would have made it ideal for hanging on a watch or vest chain.

The top is covered by a hinged lid which fastens securely with a tiny indentation.

Upon opening the lid, you will find a number of maker's marks around the inner rim.

The first of these marks reads "R.P" for famed British silversmiths Robert Pringle and Sons.

This is followed by a lion passant (a mark used on silver of English make), a date mark "y", and finally, the mark of the Birmingham Assay Office (an anchor on its side).

The date mark, "y", indicates that the piece was manufactured in 1898.

The lion passant and date mark are also stamped on the underside of the lid, which also shows a light gold-washed finish. T

The Robert Pringle "crossed axe" hallmark is pictured above the other two.

Even the sterling loop at the bottom of the case features a die-stamped "lion passant".

There is expected minor wear and oxidization to the interior of the case. The exterior of the case shows only a few minor surface scratches and a single, minuscule dent. Otherwise, it remains in outstanding antique condition.

An item as unusual and beautiful as this one is sure to make an excellent gift or addition to your personal collection.
