If you are a collector of Billiken items, this brooch is a superb piece in quality, size, and style. Rarely have we seen one with these dimensions with its fabulous patina and condition.
Charming, cute, and a little bit odd, the Billiken has been a symbol of the worry-free life since schoolteacher Florence Pretz saw him in a dream in 1908.
After patenting the elfish imp's likeness, Billiken toys, banks and statues were manufactured all around the world. It was a wildly popular icon with its dogma of "good luck".
That faded quickly, but is enjoying a huge renaissance of popularity given its antiquity and meaning.
This is a fun antique brooch depicting the Billiken with all of his mischievous charm.
The brooch is a substantial size and made of beautifully oxidized brass.
As you can see, the stamped design is rendered in great detail.
Like most Billikens, this one is portrayed with cute pointy ears, a pot belly and his legs stuck straight out so you can see the bottoms of his feet.
A rich patina covers all of the wonderful detail.
Some of the deeper areas of the design are covered with a coat of mossy-green verdigris. This gives the piece a really rich, antique look and gives the design great dimension.
Finally, a small stamped mark on the reverse of the brooch depicts an outline of the Billiken and reads "Trademark Billiken". A classic "C"-style brooch clasp will make the piece easy to wear or display.
Despite some time enhanced oxidization, this fun antique brooch remains in great condition.
A real collector's piece!
