This antique beauty has nice size and boasts beautiful, rich 14 karat gold-plating. The piece has been professionally tested to ensure the quality and purity of the gold.
The Roman goddess Diana is pictured in profile on this cameo. Masterful carving has given her incredibly ornate detail and dimension. This is truly one of the finest cameos we've seen.
The large part of the value of cameos rests in the quality of the carving regardless of the material used in the setting. This is a high quality carving.
Since the invention of the cameo, Diana has been a continuing source of inspiration.
She is frequently pictured with a crescent moon adorning her hair, symbolizing her dominion as goddess of the moon.
The incredible detail of Diana's hair and face is absolutely mesmerizing, as well as the realistic pleats in her toga.
The carving is bezel-set and surrounded by a delicate hand-etched frame with foliate scroll-work on the top, bottom and sides.
You can see a small line on the left side where the metal was joined.
A traditional "C"-style brooch clasp and pendant loop on the reverse of the cameo make it easy to display and wear in a number of styles.
You will find a small length of gold chain attached to the loop with a tiny clasp. This can be kept or removed according to the buyer's preference.
Other than some light oxidization, a bit of wear to the reverse of the carved cameo, and a few minor surface scratches this extraordinary cameo remains in very good antique condition.
