This fantastic antique cameo features an masterfully-carved depiction of the classic Greek figure Selene, the goddess of the Moon. The divine conch shell cameo is set in a lustrous 14 karat yellow-gold bezel.
As you can see, the cameo is rendered in incredible detail. The scene features the goddess Selene riding in her chariot which is pulled by two beautifully carved horses.
The goddess is often depicted in her chariot drawing the blanket of night over the sky.
Cameos have a storied history that dates as far back as the Roman Empire. A cameo is typically created by carving a high (or positive) relief image into stone, glass, coral, or as in the case of this piece, conch shell. Historically, conch has been the preferred material for generations of Italian cameo-makers.
The carved shell is embraced by a short bezel of divine 14 karat yellow gold. This is framed by a very narrow "rope" edge, giving the brooch setting a nice, elegant look.
The piece has been professionally tested to ensure the purity of the gold.
A classic "C"-style brooch clasp on the reverse is commensurate with the age of the piece, and will make it easy to wear and display.
Only some minor wear and a few teeny tiny spots of glue can been seen on the reverse of the shell, wear it has been affixed in the bezel. Otherwise, the cameo remains in good antique condition.
