This beautiful hand-carved Japanese Komainu figure is a dazzling example of Japanese artisanry.

It boasts an incredible degree of detail and features an age-enhanced finish.

The Komainu can best be described as the Japanese equivalent to the traditional Chinese Fu Dog.

The stylized lion-dog creatures have guarded the entranced to Shinto shrines for centuries, warding off ghosts and evil spirits.

It is said that the animal's open mouth is simultaneously forming both the first and last letter of the Sanskrit alphabet, symbolizing the beginning and end of all things.

This exceptional vintage figure is a nice size, measuring almost 16 inches long.

It has been hand-carved from an extremely light wood, likely balsa or spruce.

The Komainu's face, legs and tail are accented with gold paint while some of the areas of the tail and face are embellished in deep shades of red.

The tail was carved separately and attached to the larger figure; it is securely affixed.

Six small cork circles are attached to the underside of the figure helping to prevent any undue scratching to the wooden surface or any underlying surfaces.

As you can see, the wooden figure shows a fair amount of surface-wear which gives it a rich, time enhanced appeal.

There is also a small crack along the wooden surface near the figure's neck.

Otherwise, this piece remains in very good vintage condition.

This Komainu statue will make a bold yet elegant statement in your décor.
