This is an amazing sterling topped, cut glass perfume or scent bottle by William Comyns & Sons.
It has the depiction of the most beautiful angles on the top and around the sides of the sterling lid.
The original stopper is with the bottle.
The lid is fully hallmarked.
The sides of the glass bottle are smooth and clear, while a hand-etched star on the exterior of the base adds a lovely, elegant touch.
It's the lid that really catches the eye, masterfully cast with a dazzling pattern of realistic leaves and cherubs around the sides and a large angel on the top.
The detail is extraordinary and serves as an excellent example of the pervading style of the time.
There are several die-stamped maker's marks on the top of the lid as well as the collar.
The first mark on the upper-area of the lid reads "W.C" inside a lemon-shaped lozenge with four small nodes on the sides, top and bottom.
This is one of the earlier marks of famed British silver manufacturers William Comyns & Sons, and was first registered in 1884.
This mark is followed by the lion passant (a mark ascribed to most British-made silver items) and a date mark.
The date mark (a lower-case "e") indicates that the piece was manufactured in 1900.
William Comyns was established in 1858 in London. Noted for the finest of sterling items and related glass wares, they reached the height of popularity in 1880s and their items were sold through only the best shops of the era including Tiffany & Co. in Paris and New York.
These three marks are also found on the sterling collar, in addition to the London Assay Office's "leopard head" mark.
The lid opens on a substantial hinge to reveal a lovely gilt interior as well as the original glass stopper.
Stoppers are incredibly difficult to find with their original bottles, especially in such fine condition.
The piece has been professionally tested to ensure the purity of the silver.
With only some minor wear and a few light surface scratches, this scent bottle remains in outstanding antique condition and will make a truly elegant addition to your collection.
