This is a beautiful antique magnifying glass features dazzling mother-of-pearl and lustrous sterling silver. This would have hung from a chatelaine or stung on a chain around the neck.
Bold, yet elegant design makes the piece an excellent example of Georgian-era style.
The glass eyepiece tucks gracefully away inside of a case made with two wonderfully iridescent panels of mother-of-pearl.
Both sides of the MOP are held in place with two slightly fluted sterling silver components.
One side of the sterling silver houses the hinge that allows the eyepiece to move in and out of the case.
One side of the mother-of-pearl shows a small chip on the edge; please see the pictures for more detail.
The sterling component opposite the hinge includes a tall sterling loop so that the magnifying glass can be worn on a necklace or chatelaine.
The piece has been professionally tested to ensure the purity of the silver.
The eye piece is set in a wide sterling frame.
The magnification is quite high; the glass remains in very good condition showing only one minuscule surface scratch.
Some areas of the sterling exhibit a light patination, but the magnifying glass remains in good antique condition overall.
This is such an elegant piece; it will look beautiful on a desk OR on a nice sterling chain as a beautiful accessory.
