We absolutely adore these gorgeous antique sugar shovels.
Rendered in lustrous sterling silver, the two sweet little spoons date from circa 1880 and were produced by the Whiting Manufacturing Company.
What we love about these shovels is the design is from the late 1800's and yet, they withstand the test of time in style. They look very sleek and contemporary and they are antiques. That is a true testament to classic design.
Whiting Silver can trace its roots as far back as 1840, with the Tifft and Whiting Firm in North Attleboro, Massachusetts.
After several years of partnership changes, the firm was finally incorporated as the Whiting Manufacturing Company in 1866. They would become a major producer of fine sterling flatware and holloware.
These darling spoons are made entirely with sterling silver and have been professionally tested to ensure their quality.
Each identical spoon features a beautiful and dimensional design on the handle. This is Whiting's classic "Oval Twist" pattern which was patented in 1880.
The square bowl of each spoon is finished with a light, shimmering gold-wash. In addition to preventing any undue oxidization, this gives them a look of fabulous sophistication.
There are two marks on the underside of each handle; the first of these is the Whiting Company's traditional "Lion" hallmark. It is characterized by a lion resting its paw on an oval containing the letter "W". The mark simply reads "Sterling" in capital letters.
These sugar shovels are in truly incredible condition, featuring only a slight patina and one or two teeny surface scratches.
We don't polish our pieces but leave that to the buyer. We know these beauties will shine brilliantly!
