There is something so wonderfully feminine and graceful about a matching brush and mirror-set.
This gorgeous antique sterling set from the R. Wallace & Sons is a beautiful example of Art Nouveau design.
Both pieces in the set are extremely substantial, and have been professionally tested to ensure the purity of the silver.
As is the case with most cast silver items of the era, the handles are likely filled with some kind of heavy, solid wax.
The mirror and brush boast extraordinary stamped designs along the front and back of the handles, consisting of graceful, dimensional florals.
The reverse of the both the brush and mirror are embellished with a delicate engine-turned design with dozens of parallel lines which give the piece a subtle texture.
You will find a blank cartouche in the center of the back of both the brush and mirror.
The glass portion of the mirror has an elegant beveled edge and shows only a very few minimal scratches.
The brush's genuine horsehair bristles are securely attached to piece of wood. The wood is covered with a thin vinyl veneer.
This veneer shows a small chip near the top.
There are several cast-in maker's marks on both pieces near the top of the handle. The first mark reads "R.W.&S." for R. Wallace and Sons.
R. Wallace & Sons Manufacturing Company, was originally located in Wallingford, Connecticut.
Now, the company known simply as Wallace Silversmiths, continues to produce elegant sterling flatware with almost 180 years of experience.
The following mark reads "Sterling" and is accompanied by the style number, "400-1".
As you can see, both pieces exhibit a fair amount of oxidization. We intentionally do not polish vintage and antique sterling items.
We leave that to the preference of the buyer as we know some collectors prefer the natural patina.
Despite some other areas of age expected wear, this graceful set remains in very good antique condition.
