This vintage Dior hat is big, bold and an absolute collector's dream. It dates from the early 1950s and boasts the most fantastic shape and shade of aubergine-purple.
Since its inception in 1946, the Christian Dior brand has exemplified a sense of grace, style, and elegance.
This wonderful hat is a great bell-shape tapering toward the top and curving gracefully under at the bottom.
The hat is made entirely of rich purple felt with a sensual fur-like texture on the exterior. The interior of the hat maintains its smooth felt texture.
A wide strip of matching purple grosgrain lines the interior band and is further embellished with a black velvet ribbon. This is where you will find the original designer's tag. The satin tag reads "Miss Dior Created by Christian Dior" in bold black letters.
Another satin tag is attached directly to the felt slightly below the larger tag and reads "The J.L. Hudson Co. Detroit". For 120 years, the J.L. Hudson Company, or "Hudson's" claimed to be the second largest department store in the United States (second only to Macy's).
The Detroit-based company was founded by the same Joseph Hudson that would later establish the Hudson Motor Car Company.
A printed mark on the underside of the crown reads "Selene HB Body Made in Italy".
The tags show a little bit of yellowing, though the rest of the hat remains in absolutely outstanding condition.
It is elegant, soft, and daring. Absolutely beautiful.
