Here is a spectacular vintage Heintz desk set consisting of a pen tray and ink well.
Each has a beautiful classic bronze finish with an elegant floral sterling overlay.
Heintz sterling on bronze pieces are the epitome of the Arts & Crafts aesthetic in their medium, stylization, and construction.
Otto Heintz was born into a family of manufacturing jewelers established in 1875, in Buffalo, New York.
By about 1902, he had purchased a small company, renamed it the Art Crafts Shop, and began design and manufacture of copper items with colored enamel decoration.
He was granted three patents.
By 1906, he changed the name to Heintz Art Metal Shop, and shifted to bronze as the base material with sterling silver as ornamentation.
There are several maker's marks on the underside of both pieces.
The tray features the classic "HAMS" (for Heintz Art Metal Studio) diamond-shaped mark as well as marks reads "Sterling on Bronze, Pat.Aug.27.12".
You will also find a design number which appears to read 1003 (this number matches that found on the inkwell).
The inkwell exhibits the same classic diamond-shaped Heintz logo along with "Sterling on Bronze, Pat.Aug.27.12" and the design number, "1003".
Design numbers between 1000 and 1200 always correspond to desk sets and other desk accessories.
Each piece has a subtle sterling overlay depicting a simple flower and stem.
Both sterling overlays bear a small stamp near the base which reads "Sterling".
The sterling ornamentation on the tray shows some oxidization while the inkwell's sterling overlay is quite dark.
The bronze finish exhibits a slight patina and one or two minor surface scratches.
Never, ever polish a piece of Heintz sterling on bronze. A large part of the value rests in the beautiful patina that develops over time in both the sterling and bronze.
Heintz pieces were produced for a relatively short time, but succeeded in embodying the very soul of the Arts and Crafts Movement. We know you will agree.
