This is a breathtaking vintage McClelland Barclay necklace. It is made of richly oxidized brass and features incredible blue and clear rhinestone accents.
Stunning geometric style and flawless design make this necklace an Art Deco dream.
McClelland Barclay jewelry has become increasingly rare and collectible in recent years, especially when the piece is in such outstanding condition like this one.
McClelland Barclay began his career as a painter, publishing in prestigious magazines like Ladies' Home Journal and The Saturday Evening Post.
This would eventually lead to the founding of The McClelland Barclay Art Company, a brand that would produce decorative arts, jewelry and other luxury items.
At the start of World War II, Barclay (an already classically trained artist) was commissioned by the U.S. Naval Reserve to design unique camouflage.
As a Lt. Commander, he would continue his work in posters, camouflage and battlefield correspondence until the LST (short for "Landing Ship, Tank") he was aboard was torpedoed off the Solomon Islands in 1942.
The necklace is characterized by the enormous brass pendant at the bottom. This wide brass circle is only a backdrop to the fantastic silver-toned accent that has been applied to the surface.
This accent is pave-set with glorious clear rhinestones and enormous sapphire-blue faceted glass stones.
This larger pendant dangles from another smaller brass circle. This is also embellished with three large brilliant blue rhinestones and several tiny clear ones.
Two unique, stylized brass chains emanate from two small loops at the top of the smaller brass circle and culminate in a classic fold-over clasp.
Both sides of the clasp are held in place by brass components stamped with a lovely floral pattern.
There is a stamped hallmark on the reverse of the larger brass pendant that reads "McClelland Barclay".
There are areas of rich darkening and oxidization on both the brass and silver-toned rhinestone-encrusted components, though the necklace remains in excellent condition overall.
This is truly a collector's piece. Not only is it a treasure find, it is very wearable and a jewelry art that should be worn with extreme pride.
