This is an extraordinary antique bowl. In addition to featuring incredibly beautiful decoration, it possesses unusual and somewhat mysterious origins.
The bowl is quite large, measuring almost twelve inches in diameter. It is made of solid brass that has oxidized wonderfully over the years, giving the metal a rich, dimensional patina.
Both sides of the piece show a typically Asiatic landscape with rolling hills, tall grass, flowering trees and frolicking horses.
For centuries, the horse has been a significant and powerful symbol in Chinese culture, art, and feng shui. It is said that dreaming of a horse indicates great success. Perhaps this is one of the reasons that it was common to entomb horses with their deceased owners in Ancient China.
There are two small handles on each side of the bowl, carved to resemble Foo dogs. This is the colloquial name for the stylized lion statues that have guarded Chinese Imperial palaces for millennia. One of the handles shows two small holes.
Three feet are cast as an integral part of the bowl. This gives it a little extra height as well as stability.
Finally, if you look at the underside of the bowl, you will find an old, dry piece of paper taped there. In hand-written script it reads "Brought to Syracuse Indiana from the Panama Canal".
You can't help but wonder how an old Chinese bowl found its way half way around the world to South America. We leave removing the label to the buyer's preference.
The bowl certainly looks well traveled. It exhibits a few minor dents near the base. There are some areas affected by light verdigris as well as some dark spots. Part of what gives this bowl its rich, aged look is the wear that it has sustained over its many years.
Overall, the bowl remains in very good antique condition. It has great weight and classic Chinese design elements. It is a wonderful display piece with a bold personality.
