Charming, cute, and a little bit odd, the Billiken has been a symbol of the worry-free life since schoolteacher Florence Pretz saw him in a dream in 1908.
After patenting the elf-like imp's likeness, Billiken toys, banks and statues were manufactured all around the world.
This lovely little charm is a rare representation of the Billiken in time-enhanced brass.
Like most Billikens, this one is portrayed with cute pointy ears, a pot belly and his legs stuck straight out so you can see the bottoms of his feet. The figure is applied to a brass panel featuring a splendid swirling pierced and stamped floral design.
There is very small placard on the reverse of the charm with the patented Billiken trademark. It reads "Trademark Billiken" around the outlined shape of a Billiken. The mark has been slightly worn down over time, but remains visible.
As you can see, the charm exhibits some expected wear and verdigris but remains in good antique condition overall. We think the patina adds a lot to the overall "charm" of this charm.
Remember, it's good luck to buy a Billiken, but even better luck to receive one, making this antique stick pin the perfect gift. Good luck to own, but better luck to receive!
