This lovely vintage plate is not only adorable; it is a very collectible and rare piece of brass-framed porcelain from the Wurttenbergische Metallwarenfabrik Company of Wurttemberg, Germany.
The company specialized in sterling silver and silver plate, so we were thrilled to find this plate with its brass frame. Founded in September 1853, the company produces cutlery and kitchen machines to this day.
As you can see, the hand-painted plate features a sweet scene of two young children cross-country skiing. The image is beautifully rendered in vibrant shades of yellows, whites and reds with green trees in the background.
The brass frame that surrounds the porcelain plate and holds it in place exhibits some interesting pierced decoration all around as well as a nice, rich patina.
There are two very small maker's marks on the brass edge on the underside of the plate. The first of these is the Wurttenbergische Metallwarenfabrik hallmark (a running ostrich over the letter WMF encased in a diamond-shape). This is followed by "Germany". Three impressed marks on the underside of the porcelain appear to read "MXB".
Aside from the time-enhanced patina and one or two minor scratches on the brass, the porcelain shows no chips or cracking and remains in excellent antique condition.
Stand this piece on a plate stand or hang on a wall and it will delight for years to come.
