This is the most drop dead gorgeous hat we've seen. It is vintage, but is so classically styled and high brow, you would be amazed.
This is an original one-of-a-kind, custom made Jack McConnell creation.
Jack McConnell was dubbed the "king" of church hats and became THE milliner for the well heeled women needing their own statement in church hats.
Historically, "church hats" were an African American tradition of wearing special head coverings following Corinthians scripture.
There were certain protocols to wearing these hats in church to wit; size, color, shape, etc. (Example, they can't be too big to block the vision of the other parishioners, etc.) And, they had to be tasteful enough so they wouldn't have been regarded as being ostentatious.
Many women wanted very unique hats and Jack McConnell established himself as a top milliner in New York City who created one-of-a-kind originals.
These original creations were marked with a red feather tucked under the McConnell label.
His originals are truly works of art. This exceptional, lovely one-of-a-kind vintage hat is the ideal example of Jack McConnell's more demure and elegant styles.
That's not to say this baby doesn't POP; we see it complementing mint juleps at the derby perfectly.
The hat itself is formed of exquisite winter-white wool.
The body is sturdy and substantial, but provides a good amount of give allowing it to fit comfortably.
The low circular crease gives it an almost Panama hat-type look.
The band of the hat is adorned with a strip of layered Guinea pheasant feathers which are rich, dark brown with brilliant white spots.
This rigid band of feathers is further embellished with the occasional applied clear rhinestone. The brim is wider at the front at tapers to the back.
Of course, it's the grand pom-pom of bright white marabou on the right of the hat that really takes the breath of way.
Guinea pheasant "eyelashes" accentuate the luscious marabou; some are even studded with a single sparkling rhinestone.
Looking on the inside, you can see that the hat is unlined. This is customary in high-quality woolen hats as often a lining is not required.
The interior band is embellished with a ribbon of brilliant gold lamé covered with layer of white lace ribbon.
The white tag affixed to the ribbon which reads "Styled by Jack McConnell New York" is enormous.
You will find the single red feather attached to the obverse corner of the tag; this is the Jack McConnell hallmark indicating that this hat is a one-of-a-kind custom design.
This, the interior, exterior and feathers remain in fantastic vintage condition.
McConnell's are investment pieces that give any collection an air of elegance, drama, and fun.
This hat is in pristine condition in every way and will be the pride of any mad hatter's collection.
