For sale is an antique engraving by Bernhard Liebig (1873-1937). Titled “Goethes Geburtshaus vor 1755,” or “Goethe’s Birthplace before 1755,” this etching shows the house Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was born in at the time of his birth, before it had been renovated. Because of the fine detail of this etching, it is easy to see how this house transformed into the current Goethe house as it is today.
Bernhard Liebig is known for his etchings and paintings, and this is an exquisite example of his work. He studied at the Berlin Academy of Arts at Julius Ehrentraut and Max Koner and at the Weimar art school at Carl Frithjof Smith. Between 1888 and 1918 was his most creative period, when most of his works were made. His series of etchings of Frankfurt, the location of the Goethe House, were completed in the year 1900.
This was framed by The Picture Shop Progressive, a part of the Meekins, Packard & Wheat department store. The store was built in 1915 in Springfield, MA and was in operation until sometime in the late 1930s. This frame is an excellent vintage treasure itself, on top of having the amazing Liebig original print sealed inside!
The etching itself measures 4 3/8” long by 3” wide, while the frame measures 8 ¾” long by 6 ¾” wide. It is signed in pencil by the artist below his etched signature. It is in excellent condition, though the frame itself has some chips missing on the paint. The paper on the back of the frame appears to have minor water damage, though the print inside is undamaged. It is in amazing condition for its age!
Measurements: 8 ¾” long, 6 ¾” wide, ½” deep
