This is beautiful antique ashtray dates from the American Arts and Crafts Era, around the late 19th century.
Made from hand-hammered brass, it exhibits all the hand-hewn style and quality of an Arts and Crafts era piece.
As you can see, the bottom of the tray exhibits a design featuring long pipes swirling around a central banner which reads "ASHES".
The tiny details and heavy patina give the design wonderful depth and character. There is also some light verdigris covering various areas of the tray that adds to the time enhanced appeal.
We would NOT recommend polishing this ashtray. The natural patina and light verdigris are beautiful.
The bottom and exterior scalloped edge preserve a great deal of their gold-tone brilliance (with some spots of darkening, of course).
This ashtray presents a fantastic example of the simple forms and traditional craftsmanship that characterized the Arts and Crafts Movement.
