This beautiful vintage Shipibo hand-painted "effigy" vase is an absolute must-have for the avid South American Arts-collector.
The Shipibo are an indigenous people who live deep within the Peruvian rainforest and, despite 300 years of contact with Europeans, maintain a strong cultural identity.
Called an "effigy" due to its resemblance to a human figure, this extraordinary hand-made vase features exceptional hand-painted detail.
It bears a very traditional appearance with the classic beige on red-ground finish and stylized, linear decoration.
This remarkable vintage effigy vase likely dates from the early to mid 20th century and boasts substantial size and exquisite, traditional Shipibo decoration.
You will notice that, while the piece features a globular base, the face is rendered in such a way as to portray more life-like, dimensional features.
The linear decoration varies in line-weight and continues around the sides and onto the effigy's face.
The base is colored with a light sienna-colored glaze while the top denotes the figure's hair and is rendered in a darker shade of umber.
The interior of the vase is a very deep shade of dark sienna-red and shows some slight inconsistencies in wear and thickness. This is to be expected.
You will notice that some areas of the finished exterior are slightly glossier than others, particularly the base.
Though the vessel shows some minor wear, a few dark spots and some light surface scratches, it remains in very good vintage condition overall.
This vase will make a truly enchanting addition to your collection or décor.
