Okay, this is just cool and fun and retro. This would look so great in a library or family room or by your bar.
We were thrilled to find this fantastic Cigar Store Indian bust. Measuring over two feet tall, this Indian Chief is rendered with wonderful detail and color.
The bust is a fantastic size and quite substantial. It is carved from a solid block of wood and rendered in extraordinary detail.
Native Americans had long been associated with tobacco as they had introduced it to the Europeans in the late 15th century. Most traditional Cigar Store Indians have a highly stylized look.
This Cigar Store Indian wears an intricately carved feather headdress which is embellished with painted beads.
The feathers far all the way down the figure's back and culminate at the bottom of the bust. There is a feather-shaped stripe of bright blue framed by bone-white adorning the reverse of the bust between the feathers.
His long hair peeks out from both sides and comes to the shoulders.
The figure appears to be wearing a buckskin shirt which is decorated with various colorful embellishments. A row of fringe hangs from the buckskin shirt.
The chest area features the carved profile a buffalo with a minimal organic background.
He wears a carved and pained two-strand necklace of what appear to be turquoise beads around his neck.
The figure's face is a dark shade of red and features really beautiful, dimensional carving. He wears a rather stern expression, and you can see the age and wear of his skin.
Finally, the base is decorated with a simple, triangular repeating pattern in various shades of blue and red.
In addition to the absolutely extraordinary carvings, the colors of the bust are truly marvelous.
There is a good amount of wear to the paint, but this is likely an integral part of the overall design. It's the "age" and "wear" that really gives this Cigar Store Indian bust his wonderfully authentic appeal.
There a few spots where the paint has worn away to reveal tiny areas of primer and wood, but these are both easily reparable and barely noticeable.
Other than the somewhat aged looking finish and a few small dings and scratches here and there, the bust remains in outstanding vintage condition.
This is really a treasure-find; collectors and decorators alike will absolutely adore this incredible piece of American folk art.
