Here is a beautiful Victorian tambour-front writing cabinet made of exotic South American mahogany.
The charming little desk is a stunning example of high quality craftsmanship.
As you can see, the desk features a roll-front of "tambour" front that opens to reveal a delightful array of shelves inside. You can see the designs where ink wells would have been placed.
The "tambour" is characterized by dozens of narrow strips of jointed wood which give the ability to articulate or "roll".
There are three shelves total, two of which feature half-circle indentations in the front, likely for ink-wells and bottles.
The top shelf includes a teeny drawer, where the original key is stored safely inside. The bottom drawer locks by pushing the key deep inside the drawer and turning. It must be pushed in the full depth to turn the key.
The key is meant for the larger bottom drawer where the tambour-front can be secured and locked when closed.
While the front of the drawer is mahogany, the interior is constructed with rich red cherry wood.
The curved sides, shelves, small and large drawer, tambour-front and top of the desk are all accented with extraordinary inlaid brass striping.
It's a really lovely addition to an already masterfully constructed piece of furniture.
The inlaid brass on the right-most curving edge is bowing out slightly, but the remaining areas of inlay are in excellent condition.
Further evidence of the piece's high quality craftsmanship is on the reverse, where you will find that each back-corner is constructed top to bottom with a series of beautiful and smooth box-joints.
The cabinet sits on a short base with lovely mitered edges. The base shows some age-appropriate wear near the front edge.
Four stripes of cream colored felt line the underside of the cabinet, preventing any undue scratching to the wood or underlying surfaces.
Despite some expected age appropriate minor wear and light oxidization, this graceful piece of Victorian furniture remains in very good antique condition.
This would be the most amazing gift with personalized stationery or note cards and a very special pen. It is just a cool Antique piece.
