Here is an absolutely gorgeous vintage lamp with a distinctly "astral" theme. This is a marvelous example of this retro lamp.
The lamp features an enormous globe near the base surrounded by a gold-tone wheel.
The wheel features elegant turned sprockets. The midnight-blue orb is embellished with little six-pointed stars in shiny silver. Combined with the wheel, the orb gives the impression of a stylized Saturn-like planet.
The lamp shade is a contemporary piece.
This "wheel" once bore a bright gold-colored painted finish, though much of the finish has worn away from years of age.
The orb sits on top of a brass stand with four claw feet that rest on top of the bevel edged marble base.
It is genuine marble and characterized by a rich, almost-black tone of gray with flashes of dark ochre veining.
The shaft is made of elegant turned-brass and features lovely curves until straightening toward the top.
This leads to a single 250-volt bulb socket with a simple twisting switch.
The harp and finial are new but match the overall look of the lamp beautifully.
The original cord emanates from a very small hole in the side of the base.
Despite the fact that the lamp works perfectly well, we recommend getting lamps like this one rewired to avoid fire hazards.
The brass feet, shaft, and wheel around the central orb show a bit of oxidization and a few light surface scratches.
The orb itself also shows some minor wear; some of the silver stars exhibit some slightly smudged paint.
These issues are purely cosmetic, and lend the lamp a feeling of great retro-character. Overall, it remains in good vintage condition.
