The stunning antique tray we are so thrilled to offer is a beautiful example of Max Dannhorn porcelain. This is a large service tray that is in great condition.
The business of Max Dannhorn was founded in 1872, and was noted for producing "toy" magic lanterns of brass and wood.
Next to magic lanterns, Dannhorn also produced a range of optical toys as well as other toy pieces, and metal-framed serving trays.
The actual trade mark was rarely applied to their products. Most items produced by Max Dannhorn where 'combined' items like the wide array of serving trays and similar items.
The trays are typically found with burnished brass or silver-plated frames and have stoneware 'centerpieces' in a creamed white glaze finish with decorations, as in this example.
The trays were nearly always were produced for him by the company of Villeroy & Boch from the town of Mettlach (Saar Basin).
As you can see, the tray is absolutely enormous, measuring 23 inches long.
The flat porcelain tray is secured within a lovely silver-plated metal frame.
This frame features simple pierced decoration and relatively demure, but elegant handles.
The artistic decoration that has been applied in several layers of glaze is so incredibly beautiful.
Every shape has been meticulously stenciled, giving them crisp, sharp edges. This stands in complementary contrast to the white "diffused" glaze in the center of the tray.
Modest shades of forest green and winter white give the tray a wonderfully elegant look.
Four ball-feet on the underside of the metal frame prevent the porcelain from scratching.
The underside of the porcelain is where you will find the only hallmark which reads "9010". Based on this mark, we have been able to date it from 1895 to the very early 1900s.
Excluding some very minor spots on the porcelain and some areas of wear on the metal frame, this lovely serving tray remains in excellent antique condition overall.
We LOVE this tray and have held it for a long time. The porcelain top has a wonderful translucence and sort of "milky" glow.
It is gorgeous and the size is perfect for serving coffee and pastries. It is also a beautiful display piece.
Given its age, it is in amazing condition.
