This remarkable American Brilliant cut-glass covered butter dish from Meriden is an absolutely dazzling example of the style and remains in outstanding vintage condition.

Besides being absolutely gorgeous, this piece is very rare.

Wilcox was known for silverplate works, but on rare occasions, created Sterling pieces, such as this one. This makes this a very rare find.

After merging with a number of silver companies, Meriden Cut Glass Company produced pieces like this one for a relatively short period of time (c. 1896-1923).

This period coincided with an upheaval of demand for American cut-glass items, shortly after the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876.

It is understood that this was the era in which the "Brilliant Period" began.

This dazzling dish is decorated in Meriden's highly-desirable "Wind" pattern which features a number of traditional features including cross-hatches cuts and 16-pointed stars along with the more romantic addition of etched, frosted florals.

The pattern found in the Meriden catalog (p. 138).

As you can see, the tall cover features straight sides which taper to a more globular top.

A bright sterling finial caps the dome and includes simple yet elegant turned features.

The piece exhibits two marks which include the word "Sterling" and the hallmark of the Wilcox Silver Plate Company.

Predominately a manufacturer of silverplate wears, the Wilcox Company produced the occasional sterling piece, making this a truly rare example.

You will notice that the top side of the plate remains perfectly smooth while the complexity and texture of the cut pattern on the underside shows through brilliantly.

The outermost edge of the underside of the dish is further embellished with the same foliate etched pattern that decorates the base of the cover.

There is a lip measuring a little under an inch tall at the center of the plate; this allows the cover to rest easily without any sliding.

You can see a small amount of wear and oxidization to the sterling finial as well as a few immaterial flea-bite scratches to the glass.

Overall, this rare and highly collectible American Brilliant covered butter dish remains in outstanding vintage condition.
