Antique Blown Glass Prosthetic Eye with High Detailing
Since the dawn of human history the eye has been an omnipresent image characterized by salient and often mysterious symbolism.
It would not be until the 16th century that the first prosthetic eyes came into use.
We are pleased to present this incredible antique prosthetic eye.
The eye is adult sized and has a good amount of substance and weight.
Modern prosthetic eyes are made of plastic, though this one was carefully blown out of glass and painstakingly hand-painted.
The iris boasts a beautiful array of rich grays, honey-brown, and a touch of light blue.
As you can see, the cornea is accented with tiny hand-painted "blood vessels".
There is some darkening near the back of the cornea. This area is called the sclera.
Some eye related ailments cause the sclera to darken over time and, in the interest of authenticity, this prosthetic replicates the appearance beautifully.
With almost no visible wear and only one or two petite flea-bite scratches, this prosthetic eye remains in outstanding antique condition.
These eyes have become incredibly collectible in recent years and prized for their peculiar and alarming beauty.
We know this is so creepy, but the art and skill involved in the creation of these prosthetics is really amazing.
They make really great display pieces and certainly, the most interesting conversation pieces.
