We love this little server. The detail and colors are amazing. It is of obvious very high quality.
For over 125 years Rosenthal has stood for the utmost quality and elegance.
A number of artists worked for the company and produced designs of unparalleled beauty, but perhaps none so talented and as the master sculptor Hugo Meisel.
Meisel worked for Rosenthal from 1936 to 1937, and insisted upon doing the bulk of the actual sculpting himself. We can say with much confidence that this lovely Mohren figurine was carved by the master's hand.
This extraordinary piece is one of Meisel's blackamoor food servants.
These pieces are hard to find and coveted because of the extreme detailing and vibrant colors.
He strides forward with a plate of turkey balanced on his shoulder.
He wears a dazzling pastel yellow outfit embellished with beautiful, raised enamel in light blue.
His turban echoes the color perfectly, and features a tall plume on the top.
From the points of the slippers to the folds and pleats in the figure's jacket and pants, he is depicted with the utmost detail; this is particularly true of the magnificently hand-painted face.
On the underside of the tired, brown pedestal on which the character stands are a number of wonderfully preserved maker's marks.
The center of the underside boasts a floral cartouche included in the ceramic, the interior of which features a painted hallmark which reads "Rosenthal Bahnhof Selb Bavaria Pastell China".
The artist's name, "H. Meisel", is stamped above this and below is the figure's number, "865".
To the left of the cartouche is the company's traditional painted crest which reads Rosenthal Germany and to the right "Dekoration Entwurf Otto Koch Handgemalt Kolb" is painted.
Otto Koch served as the factory's manager until 1966.
The figure's very end tip of left pinky finger is slightly broken, though this can be easily repaired. You have to look very closely to see the break.
Otherwise, the figurine is in excellent condition and features exquisitely preserved paint and detail.
This has amazing color and detailing. It is a treasure to be sure.
The discerning collector is sure to recognize this Rosenthal figure as a must-have.
