This is an extraordinary WWII era handbag made of delicate gold-tone mesh. This would have been made between 1945 and 1949 in US occupied Germany.
Masterfully made and impeccably designed, this little evening bag is a beautiful example of classic 1940s aesthetic.
Given the era and the compromised economy during the war era, this would have been an extravagant purchase.
As you can see, the exterior of the bag is covered entirely with tiny metal mesh in an elegant shade of rich, dark gold.
Inside, the bag is lined with luxurious cream-colored silk. There is even a tiny pocket, perfect for carrying cards or change.
Inside the pocket you will find the original silken manufacturer's tag which reads "Made in US Zone Germany".
This makes the bag a rare find.
The top of the bag is characterized by a classic brass frame which features a lovely stamped floral motif.
A classic ball clasp with giant inset clear rhinestones adorns the top of the handbag and keeps it securely shut.
Finally, a short length of textural brass chain makes a perfect strap. It will make the evening bag ideal for carrying in hand or creatively displaying.
All of the gold-tone metals show some expected darkening while the silk inside shows the slightest amount of yellowing.
Otherwise, this darling evening bag remains in great vintage condition.
