Here is a beautiful antique decorative basket made of brilliant sterling silver.
As you can see, the piece features extraordinary craftsmanship and a timeless and elegant design.
The little basket was manufactured by the Matthews Company, which was founded in Newark, New Jersey in 1907. This piece likely dates from shortly thereafter.
The basket features a lovely, smooth finish with an elegant little foot at the bottom.
You can see that the rim boasts spectacular decoration with a pierced "criss-cross" motif.
There is even a movable solid sterling handle attached to each side of the rim.
The handle is embellished with a demure but elegant floral design on the top and sides.
You will find the appropriate hallmarks stamped on the underside of the foot.
The first of these is the traditional Matthews Company mark consisting of a capital "M" with a scimitar.
This is followed by the word "Sterling" and the style number "B2862".
Some areas of the basket exhibit some light patination; we leave polishing to the preference of the buyer.
Despite some very light surface scratching here and there, this beautiful sterling basket remains in excellent antique condition.
