This exceptional antique walnut library table is a stunning example of the elaborate craftsmanship that pervaded American furniture shortly after the turn-of-the-century.
The table was constructed by renowned American firm, Imperial Furniture Company.
The company was founded in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1903 by Stuart Foote who is credited with having invented the low "coffee" table.
This piece is made with beautifully lacquered walnut wood.
You will find the maker's oval-shaped logo burned into the underside of the table top which includes the company's Shield emblem; it reads "Imperial Tables, Grand Rapids, Imperial Furniture Company".
As most Imperial Tables manufactured between 1910 and 1917 were marked with the oval-shaped logo, it follows that this table was likely made during the first quarter of the 20th century.
Imprinted style numbers above the logo read "179" and "28" respectively.
The table is characterized by a rectangular top which is held up by two bold and formally carved legs.
These are braced by a stretcher whose ends mirror the shape of the base of the legs.
The stretcher is flush with the ground and features some elegant pierced accents at the center.
Each leg is a truly stunning example of masterful craftsmanship.
They feature traditional, deeply-carved motifs including scrolls and acanthus leaves.
While the legs are heavily glazed to resemble a rich, dark hardwood, they are likely made of a polymer called "compo".
This is similar to syrocco in that craftsman would use a casting method to create wonderfully ornate "carved" designs and then match the look of the legs to the rest of the table.
Six silver-tone casters on the base of the stretcher make the piece easier to relocate and prevent any undue scratching to the wood.
The legs and stretcher show some minor scratching while the table top exhibits a few shallow divots.
Overall, this gorgeous table remains in very good antique condition.
