This beautiful antique chest is made from wonderfully rich and robust rosewood.

The chest was made during the last years of the Manchu Qing Dynasty, before the First Chinese Revolution in 1911.

The simple yet elegant box is masterfully crafted and very sturdy. The box itself sits on a slightly larger, raised base.

Each corner is reinforced with two brass brackets which are affixed with four small tacks. The U-shaped handles on each side are held to the box with flower-shaped components. A similar shape slightly below these prevents the handles from touching the wood directly.

An elegant hinged bracket at the front of the box is held shut by a removable brass pin with a hexagonal top. The lid is also hinged to the box at the back allowing it to be easily opened and closed.

When the lid is lifted, you can see that there is another, smaller box inside with a lid of its own.

Each of the brass components bears a rich, age-enhanced patina giving the chest a wonderful old-world appeal.

The finish shows some very small areas of slight wear but the chest remains in excellent antique condition overall.
