This beautiful little vintage statue, cast entirely in rich bronze, depicts Venice's most sacred symbol: the winged lion. This is a really old piece with a unique and deliberately rugged finish.
It is a symbol of Saint Mark the Evangelist who became Venice's patron saint after his remains were stolen from Alexandria and brought to the city in 828 A.D.
Our little lion features exquisite detail on his whole body and the pedestal upon which he stands; his wings and mane show especially amazing detail.
This and all winged Venetian lions are depicted with their paw resting upon an open book, the pages of which read "Pax tibi, Marce, Evangelista Meus" (or "Peace be upon you, O Mark, my Evangelist").
He exhibits expected and really enticing wear, but this lion is in otherwise good condition.
The darkening and rich patination accentuate the vintage appeal and authenticity of this piece.
The iconic image, the representation and the bronze are the trifecta that make this so desirable and collectible.
It is a triple collectible for bronze collectors, lion lovers, and the religious representation.
He is very majestic and regal and has a wonderful iconic imagery.
