Funky Retro Champlevé Enamel Dragon Clamper - image 1 of 8

Here's a great retro clamper with colorful enamel and an exotic Oriental motif.

The bracelet is decorated with fantastic champlevé enamel.

Champlevé is a centuries old technique where reservoirs or "cells" are made in a pattern and then filled with vitreous enamel.

It is important to note that the champlevé technique differs from cloisonné.

Unlike cloisonné, where metal strips are soldered to the surface of an object to create reservoirs, for champlevé the troughs for the enamel are integrally carved or cast into the piece.

Both techniques create disparate fields of colorful enamel, though pieces decorated with champlevé tend to be smoother unlike the textural, raised finish more frequently seen in cloisonné.

As you can see, this bracelet features two facing dragons on the front, both of which are surrounded by brilliant lapis-blue and cloud accents.

Each colorful reservoir of enamel is framed by a thin band of gold-tone brass which gives the overall design great dimension and shimmer.

For centuries the dragon has been the symbol of the Emperor of China.

The number of claws on a dragon's foot can symbolize a number of different things.

For instance, these dragons each have four claws, a quality long believed to represent Chinese nobility.

The clamper does not include a clasp, but opens and stays securely closed with a spring-loaded hinge at the back.

The surrounding brass shows some oxidization, and the interior exhibits some dark spots and a few light scratches. However, this fun and funky clamper remains in good vintage condition overall.

Interior circumference is 7 3/8", Front is 1" at widest point tapering to 7/16" wide at back, Rises 1/8" from wrist
Weight: 32 grams (1.13 oz)
