This pretty and unique vintage trinket box is made of deep-red syroco, and has a beautifully-cast floral motif.
"Syrocco" or, more commonly, "Syroco," is the term applied to a molded material resembling carved wood that was invented and first implemented the maker of this trinket box, the Syracuse Ornamental Company.
Made from a combination of wood compounds and casting fluids, the material was poured into molds, creating fantastic little boxes like this one.
This little box dates from the early 20th century, before the Syracuse Ornamental Company changed their name to simply "Syroco Inc." in 1930.
You will find the company's original paper sticker on the underside of the box which reads "Syracuse Ornamental Company" and "Syroco Wood".
As you can see, both the base and lid feature a breathtaking floral motif which has been rendered with incredible depth and dimension.
The lid exhibits two large peonies at the center which are surrounded by an array of realistic buds and decorative scrolls.
Languid, leafy-scroll designs decorate the base while a pattern of vertical lines on each side create an interesting and dynamic background.
While the trinket box shows a small amount of expected wear and a few dark spots (particularly to the interior) it remains in very good vintage condition overall.
This box is a highly-collectible and beautiful example of decorative Syroco.
