We LOVE this gorgeous pair of vintage hand-carved soapstone bookends with an exotic Asiatic theme and rich color.
Also known as steatite, soapstone is a mineral comprised partly of magnesium and talc.
This gives the rock its distinctive "flecked" appearance.
These boast a rich shade of brown with tinges of sienna and burgundy and flecks of deep goldenrod-yellow.
Chinese craftsman have been using soapstone for centuries, and these beautiful bookends are an exceptional example of both technique and style.
Each bookend features a hand-carved depiction of flying dragons in high-relief.
You will notice that the dragons are highly-stylized and rendered in extraordinary depth.
The upper corner of each piece is further accented with a floral carving.
While the bookends feature "mirror image" decoration, they each have their own distinctive, hand-crafted appeal.
Both pieces show expected wear and a few very minor scratches and chips, but remain in very good vintage condition overall.
With their rich color and exceptional hand-crafted beauty, these unique bookends will make a beautiful addition to your collection and décor.
Measurements:
