Chanel S.A. was founded in early 20th century France by the famous Coco Chanel. As the creator of the “little black dress”, she was at the forefront of fashion, the first designer to significantly take fashion away from embellished, opulent designs of the 19th century and move it toward the simple elegance of early 20th century fashion.
While her clothing designs were known for their sleek look, subtle palate and lean silhouette, her taste in jewelry was theatrical and bold. For Coco it was never just a single strand of pearls but multiple strands of pearls looped lavishly around her neck. In the early 1930s, Chanel launched her first fine jewelry collection.
