This substantial vintage pewter belt buckle has great style and great history.
The buckle was designed by famed silversmith Sid Bell.
It was in the early 1960's that Sid Bell was working as a geologist in Alaska when he decided he needed a hobby to fill the arctic evenings.
Bell attributes his design style to his many years spent in the Alaskan wild; this buckle and many of his other pieces exhibit examples of animals he encountered in the North.
Bell's precious metal pieces are typically labeled "Sid Bell Originals" while this buckle and other of the designer's pewter designs are signed "Pilgrim Pewter".
As you can see, this oblong belt buckle depicts the highly-detailed profile of an American Bald Eagle.
You will agree: the level of detail and realism is absolutely exceptional.
You will notice that the eagle and surrounding textural background have received a lovely, rich layer of oxidization which enhances the dynamic look of the design beautifully.
There a number of stamped marks on the reverse of the belt buckle, the first of which reads "Cast By Pilgrim Pewter Co., Tully N.Y., 13159".
This is followed by other marks that read "Design Copyright", "Designed + Copyrighted by Sid Bell – Tully" and, finally, the year of manufacture, "19©78".
There is a very small brown spot near the base of the buckle on the front, while a few other flea-bite scratches can be seen here and there.
Overall, this cool and collectible belt buckle remains in good vintage condition overall.
