Perfect for your elegant get-togethers, this antique gravy boat from renowned American silversmiths, Howard & Co., is absolutely gorgeous.
It has fabulous style and great weight and balance. The fluted design is very unusual.
Established in 1866, the company produced some of the country's finest, high-quality sterling silver until about 1922.
This particular piece is dated to 1895, and remains in astounding condition.
It is characterized by a dazzlingly scalloped body and foot, though the interior is what really catches the eye.
The inside of the gravy boat has been beautifully gilded, giving it a shiny, light gold finish.
There is a wonderful hand-engraved monogram on the exterior of the piece which reads "F.A.G." As monogram protocols go, the middle "A" is for the first name, so it would be the initials "AFG."
The handle is quite graceful, featuring a simple swirling motif.
The architecture of the handle, where it is appropriately held to balance the weight of the piece in a pouring position, is very impressive.
There are several hallmarks imprinted on the underside of the gravy boat, the first of which reads "Howard & Co.". There others read "New York", "Sterling", "1895" and finally "205".
Though the piece exhibits some areas of very minor darkening and very light surface wear, it exemplifies the Victorian aesthetic: graceful and elegant to a tee.
This has been polished, but not to a high shine. It will be absolutely stunning with a full shined finish.
This piece will be the most impressive addition to any elegant dinner setting.
