“Sunset at Quassapaug Lake” diminutive oil painting on artist board of a cranberry colored sky with clouds over a calm lake: By William H. Werdler. An island with a rock and tree is depicted in the foreground with rolling mountains in the distance. Lake Quassy is a 296 acre lake which the Native Americans translated to mean “Big Pond” or “Big Rock”. It is reported that in the 1600-1700’s a fisherman could rent a boat and catch fish by the bucket load. By the early 1900’s Lake Quassy became a stop along the trolley line between Waterbury and Woodbury, Connecticut. It has been a staple in Connecticut entertainment for over 100 years and remains a summer resort and local landmark. Initialed, dated ‘77 lower left. Circa 1877. Paper label verso. Exceptional gilded egg and dart reeded frame with corner leaves original to the painting. Dimensions: 11.25” H x 12.25” W framed
