“Ice Skating at Twilight” oil painting on panel of a serene pond scene with period clothed skaters enjoying a refreshing day outside. Circa 1875. Signed with conjoined initials and “PARIS” lower right. In original highly detailed gilded frame with floral and acanthus leaf motif. By noted artist Conrad Wise Chapman who was born in Washington D.C. and grew up in Rome, Italy before moving to Virginia. Mr. Chapman was taught to paint by his father, artist John Gadsby Chapman and nurtured by George Loring Brown and others in the American expatriate group of artists living in Rome at that time. Chapman served in the Confederate States Army from 1861 to 1865. As a member of Kentucky's famous "Orphan Brigade," Chapman suffered a serious head wound during the April 1862 Battle of Shiloh, an injury that would plague him for the rest of his life. After the end of the American Civil War, unable to reconcile to the Confederacy's loss, Chapman followed Confederate General John B. Magruder to Mexico where he painted a series of views of the country’s landscape, the first American artist to do so. Following his years in Mexico, Chapman also spent time in France and England. In 1898, his entire collection of paintings went on view at the Union League Club in New York City. After his move to Virginia, he sold 31 paintings to the Confederate Memorial Literary Society, which later became the American Civil War Museum. Overall, Chapman's works have great historical significance as Civil War record.

Provenance: previously sold at Sotheby’s New York on December 5, 1996 for $24,150 (including buyer’s premium). Subsequently purchased from NJ estate of Sotheby’s buyer. Chapman’s highest price at auction was close to $350,000 in 2016.
