Important American Folk Art items carved by Civil War soldier Edgar B. Van Valkenberg, New York 14th infantry, who enlisted as a Private on April 30, 1861 in Hudson, NY. The tureen was carved in 1861 and cup in 1870. This soldier and his regiment fought in early battles in Falmouth, Virginia. He was discharged for disability on July 30, 1862. The large square lidded box is rare and fine, featuring elaborate carvings of shields and other patriotic motifs. There are 3 relief carved handles --- "FALMOUTH" is carved on the lid handle. Several birds are featured including two different views of homing pigeons with a letter tied around their necks. It is not clear if this signified that the soldier was a messenger during the war or if homing pigeons were used in the war. Perhaps this piece was carved while the soldier was in a prisoner of war camp. The fine folk art cup with a full relief dog as the handle and similar birds to the lidded box is dated 1870, after discharge. Measurements --- tureen: 4.75” high, 3.25” square; cup: 3.4" high, 2.25” diameter.
