This pin has an autumnal feel, with oak leaves and acorns. The design has been painstakingly pierced and chased from a single disc of sterling silver; the acorn caps are enhanced by finely spaced cross-hatching. The back of the pin also has a bale and can be worn as a pendant, making this a very versatile piece.
Stavre Gregor Panis and his wife Gladys were silversmiths with their own studio in Falmouth, MA on Cape Cod. For a more in-depth article on their work, please follow the link on my 'Favorite Links' page. I'm a big fan of their work and own several of their pins.
The back is marked sterling and with 'SGP' in a triangle, which is the maker mark for Stavre Gregor Panis. This pin is also stamped with a 'G' next to the SGP mark, indicating it was designed by Gladys. Gladys Hamilton Panis died in 2001 at the age of 101, but I believe that this pin was made well before that time, and likely before Stavre passed away in 1974 at the age of 85.
The pin measures approximately 1 5/8" across, and is slightly domed. The pin mechanism with a roll-over safety clasp operates smoothly and is in excellent working order.
