Whiting and Davis Scarab Pendant Necklace Gold Tone Enamel
WHAT WE LOVE ABOUT THIS PIECE Whiting and Davis's interpretation of an Egyptian scarab is big, bold and colorful!
MATERIAL Gold tone plated base metal with enameled glass
SIZE Pendant measures 1.75 inches tall by just over 1.25 inches wide. The gold tone plated snake chain measures 21 inches long.
MARKS and AGE Chain connector is marked Whiting and Davis. Egyptian revival jewelry made another comeback in the 1970s with the USA tour of King Tut's treasures to various museums around the country.
SYMBOLISM The scarab was sacred to ancient Egyptians as it belonged to Khepera, the god of the rising sun. The scarab was placed on top of the heart of a mummy so that the heart, symbolizing the conscience, would not be able to speak. This was so that the soul could say nothing that might hinder its access to the afterlife. The scarab is a powerful image of the afterlife, resurrection and renewal in Egyptian history, appearing on art, seals, amulets and jewelry.
CONDITION The gold tone plating shows very little wear. There is a rough edge on the top of the glass scarab cabochon, not exactly a chip or a crack but the surface is not smooth in a small section. Excellent, vintage condition.
Please NOTE that some photos are magnified to provide detail. This magnification can sometimes show minor marks from normal wear that are not visible when worn. Please refer to the measurements given for accurate size information.
Gender: Unisex, Age Group: Adult, Color: Gold tone/Blue/Orange/Tan, Size: 1.75 inches/21 inches
