SYMBOLISM or HISTORY From the original insert that comes with this piece, “In ancient Egypt amulets were the most common type of jewelry. They were intended to protect or help the wearer. Some of these amulets were derived from hieroglyphic writing, such as the ankh sign, meaning ‘life’. . . This ankh is inspired by a smaller version of an ankh in the collection of the Egyptian Museum, Cairo.”
Due to the 1922 discovery of the intact tomb of King Tut, in the Valley of the Kings, there have been a series of Egyptian Revival periods during the 20th century. The most recent was during the 1970s tour of the tomb's treasures in the USA. This piece was originally sold via the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s gift shop as a souvenir of the exhibit.
CONDITION This piece was acquired still in its plastic wrapper complete with the insert card so it is in excellent new, old stock condition with no visible wear noted. Roll over safety clasp in working condition. The last photo is taken indoors in natural light. The insert card was stapled inside the wrapper so there are staple holes in the paper. Wonderful to find the informative insert card with this piece!
