Vintage Dragon Serpent Brooch Pin Huge Rhinestone Beauty
Offering a large statement brooch of a dragon with a serpent's tail featuring a beautiful array of rhinestones in several different colors, shapes and sizes. Meant to mimic the rich colors of emeralds, sapphires, amethysts and rubies, every one of the sparkly rhinestones is prong set and the ones with open backs are gold foiled.
MATERIAL Gold tone plated metal and rhinestones
SIZE Measures 4 inches wide by 2.5 inches tall. Weighs 28 grams so best to wear on a heavier fabric like a coat or shawl. We recommend using a rubber earring back stopper on the pin to catch the brooch should the safety clasp open as often happens with heavier brooches.
MARKS Unsigned beauty
AGE circa 1960s to 1970s
SYMBOLISM or HISTORY In the Chinese Zodiac, the dragon is the 5th creature, equal to Leo the lion. In Taoist beliefs, the dragon represents the spirit of change. In both China and Japan, the dragon was the symbol for royalty and good fortune. It can be symbolic of power and spirituality, good as well as evil. They are guardians of treasure, especially gold, and keepers of secrets.
CONDITION One of the wrist joints has a soldered repair but it is well done and only visible under loupe magnification. There is a bit of solder on the red rhinestone at the joint. 2nd to the last photo shows this close up. Roll over safety clasp in working condition. I have worn this beautiful brooch on my coat lapel and it’s an excellent conversation piece. We have not attempted to clean this piece and yet, the rhinestones still sparkle. 3rd & 4th photos taken outdoors in natural light with no filter. Excellent, vintage condition.
