This carved and painted sign shows a stylized pineapple with a deeply carved, integral frame. The pineapple figure is both painted and gilded. It measures 30" by 22 1/2" and 2 1/4" deep.
We believe this is a 20th Century hospitality sign for an inn or restaurant. Beginning in Colonials days the pineapple, hung from the mast of a newly arrived ship, signaled a welcome to all to come and see the goods available for sale. Wealthy colonials used the pineapples as centerpieces for lavish dinner parties.
We are quite taken with the form and color.
