This recumbent lion figure on rectangular base is made in sewer tile material and likely dates to the late 1800's or early 1900's when out of work ornamental potters found work with firms producing sewer tiles and other industrial products. These artisans were allowed to use leftover clay at the end of the day to produce ornamental pieces such as this.
You just have to love that grin.
The piece measures 9 1/2" long by 5" wide and 6 1/2" tall. Not the hollowed out form in the pictures.
Condition is very good. It was never glazed and shows no losses or repairs.
