This 21" wide by 14" deep and 8" tall paint decorated six-board bible box is in pine, with right-hand till, snipe (staple) hinges and mortise lock (removed). It has dovetailed sides and the bottom and lid battens are secured with rose-head nails. This construction and decoration suggests late 18th Century probably Pennsylvania.

The lid design is a central, three blossom tulip with elaborate, tombstone, border and compass flowers against a blue background. Colors are red, yellow, blue, white and green. The lid's thumbnail border is in red.

The front panel has a circular design of a distelfink in red, yellow and green with a blue and white border. The distelfink is a stylized gold finch popular in Pennsylvania Dutch decorative arts representing happiness and good fortune. An almost identical design is found on a slip ware pie dish in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. (See Pennsylvania Dutch America Folk Art, Henry J. Kauffman, Dover Publications, New York 1946/1964, p. 83).

The surface is all original with no over-painting. Condition is excellent with some abrasion and paint loss to the base molding. A modern lid support was added to protect the hinges.
